ROME/NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 3 – On Sept. 17, the presentation of AESI Seminars 2025 will be held at the Sala dei Mosaici of the European Parliament in Rome, a landmark event featuring European Union ambassadors, international officials and AESI students engaged in preparing for diplomatic and international careers at Italian and foreign universities.
The event will be opened by Dr. Fabrizio Spada, Director of International Relations at the European Parliament, with introductory remarks by Prof. Massimo Maria Caneva, President of AESI and Director of the International Seminar in Rome. The day will be an opportunity to highlight new strategies for university cooperation for peace, particularly the innovative collaboration between diplomacy, universities and UN peacekeeping forces.
Ambassador Massari’s Intervention.
Among the keynote speeches, a central role will be played by Ambassador Maurizio Massari, Italy’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, who will bring his contribution to the discussion with a video message on the eve of the opening of the work of the upcoming General Assembly. Massari will speak alongside General Patrick Gauchat, head of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) mission in Jerusalem, and General Stefano Del Col, Director of the Supreme Defense Council of the Presidency of the Republic and former commander of UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force deployed in southern Lebanon.

Thus, for the first time, the AESI Scientific Committee will propose a strategy for diplomacy and academia to work together with UN peacekeepers to promote peace internationally. This cooperation represents a significant innovation in foreign policy, providing analysis and preventive action aimed at rebuilding crisis contexts.
It aims to bring about a radical change in the training of future UN diplomats and experts through more focused preparation consistent with current challenges. Cooperation between universities, diplomacy and peacekeepers is not only a step forward in training, but also an initiative aimed at creating a new culture of solidarity and crisis prevention.
Conclusions and Future Perspectives
The day will conclude with a debate moderated by Prof. Massimo Maria Caneva and Prof. Antonio Macchia, Vice President of AESI and Professor of History of International Relations. Also scheduled to speak are Ambassador Gianfranco Varvesi (former Italian representative to the OSCE in Vienna) and TG1 journalist Ignazio Ingrao, who will lead the discussion on the crucial role that university cooperation can play in the international peace process.
