HEALTH, DIPLOMACY AND PEACE
ATHENS HEALTH, DIPLOMACY AND PEACE 13 OCTOBER 2025
From October 12 to 14, 2025, the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation took part in several key events of the Hippocratic Week — an international initiative held from October 12 to 19 and dedicated to the universal values of medicine, ethics, and scientific cooperation.
The event, organized by the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos and the Global Doctors’ Hippocratic Institute, was held under the High Patronage of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Konstantinos Tasoulas.
The Campus Bio-Medico delegation — composed of Professor Massimo Maria Caneva, Director of the Health and Diplomacy Program, and cardiology residents Dr. Chiara Serra and Dr. Nicolò Ciavaroli — attended a series of institutional and academic meetings in Athens, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy and the Apostolic Nunciature.
During the World Bioethics Day, hosted at the Hellenic Parliament, Professor Caneva delivered a lecture entitled “Health, Diplomacy and Peace”, focusing on the role of medicine as a tool for dialogue, solidarity, and reconciliation among peoples.
“Speaking about global health today means building bridges of peace between peoples and cultures. Our commitment as physicians and academics is to promote a diplomacy of care — one that transforms scientific expertise into dialogue, cooperation, and hope.”
The mission concluded with an official ceremony at the Athens Medical Association, attended by its President, Dr. George Patoulis, and representatives of international medical and diplomatic institutions.
The Hippocratic Week, which annually gathers physicians, academics, and institutional representatives, will culminate in a solemn event in Kos — the traditional Hippocratic Oath Ceremony. The participation of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital reaffirms the institution’s commitment to promoting an integrated vision of medicine as a means of human, social, and diplomatic development.
The Health and Diplomacy Program was created with the mission of promoting human dignity through global health, understood as service not only to the individual but also to the international community.
Health and Diplomacy combines analysis and diplomatic action, fostering relationships and initiatives that aim to improve living conditions, spread a culture of solidarity, and promote concrete cooperation among universities, institutions, and international organizations.
The program represents an innovative model of collaboration between science, diplomacy, and public health — a bridge for peace built through dialogue and shared research.
It involves healthcare professionals, academics, and students in interdisciplinary training paths that integrate medicine, ethics, international law, and health policy, preparing new generations to face the challenges of global health with competence and responsibility.
