AESI PRESIDENT MESSAGE
We are faced with a complex
and very worrying international scenario because of the numerous crises and conflicts now distributed in all continents. Particularly complex is that of the Middle East involving Israel Palestine, Syria and Lebanon in particular with the involvement also geostrategic issues in Egypt and Jordan with the various countries in the Region. Dramatic and with consequences for the population and civilian structures and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that is affecting the stability and security of all of Europe as well as transatlantic relations.
There is an urgent need to move in Europe with the new generation to promote a new training of future generations that is capable of preparing these young people in diplomatic and international careers to have a capacity for analysis and synthesis, as well as a creativity of responses and solutions capable of dealing with all these international realities and crises. The training so far offered by universities and study and research centers dedicated to this type of preparation is no longer enough. We need to supplement the programs with theories and practices on the ground, also making students protagonists of participation in university peace cooperation projects that are operational in crisis zones. In particular countries move both in the Middle East and in the Balkans in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Region.
From June 10-14, 2025 in cooperation with the Italian Embassy in Tallinn the will organize a mission its fourth in Estonia. The purpose is to learn about the Baltic Region and deepen the relational issues between diplomacy and academia as well as institutions assigned to the security of the European Union such as NATO.
The purpose of the AESI Mission will be focused :
– To update AESI knowledge about Estonia in both the diplomatic and academic sectors. We arrived in Estonia in 1996 and also visited in 1997 and 2003. The reality has also evolved and changed in light of recent crises and conflicts
– promote a discussion with institutions and universities on the need for a new culture of dialogue and cultural diplomacy for peace in the Baltic Region and the new role of university cooperation for Peace that is not just exchange of faculty and researchers, but an active role in facilitating dialogue between national and international institutions as well as universities in the Region.
