PRESIDENT AESI
AESI PRESIDENT MESSAGE :
HELSINKI AGREEMENTS : NEW DIPLOMACY FOR PEACE
“It is easy several times to reminded of the importance of the diplomatic spirit of Helsinki.
It is now 50 years since that historic date when the agreements laid the foundation for a civil democratic diplomatic coexistence of that part of the world in Europe that needed an agreement of a dialogue of an openness to mutual understanding.
it is increasingly urgent to train new diplomats and new academics as well as new politicians and men of institutions who have it clear in their hearts and minds that there is an urgent need for dialogue, understanding, and the training of people who are capable of analyzing situations and at the same time acting accordingly with respect for the human person.
The latest events the new international realities of these days in January 2025 remind us that it is not a violent action in a geopolitical context armed with missiles and tanks that brings peace and serenity to peoples.Either we need to have patience or we need to have the form of a dialogic diplomacy ready to take concrete steps to reach an agreement, where everyone can be in a comfortable situation.
In this new world order, great freedom is needed. The freedom to recognize the dignity of the human person both for large numbers, i.e., peoples and for each individual citizen. Each person is important and so is one’s life.
The relationships there are between people must have those who listen to them and who manage the common good a great capacity to understand and foster dialogue between peoples and people. To claim all this is to respect the dignity of the human person, men and women who need to live on this planet.
The Helsinki Accords now fifty years after they were made in that part of Europe remind us of the importance always always of diplomacy before war and conflict which is always a great loss for all.
We are faced with a complex
and very worrying international scenario because of the numerous crises and conflicts now distributed in all continents. Particularly complex is that of the Middle East involving Israel Palestine, Syria and Lebanon in particular with the involvement also geostrategic issues in Egypt and Jordan with the various countries in the Region. Dramatic and with consequences for the population and civilian structures and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine that is affecting the stability and security of all of Europe as well as transatlantic relations.
There is an urgent need to move in Europe with the new generation to promote a new training of future generations that is capable of preparing these young people in diplomatic and international careers to have a capacity for analysis and synthesis, as well as a creativity of responses and solutions capable of dealing with all these international realities and crises. The training so far offered by universities and study and research centers dedicated to this type of preparation is no longer enough. We need to supplement the programs with theories and practices on the ground, also making students protagonists of participation in university peace cooperation projects that are operational in crisis zones. In particular countries move both in the Middle East and in the Balkans in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Region.
