AESI PRESIDENT
Prof. Massimo Maria Caneva
—-

The AESI mission to Brussels on June 8, 2026, to the European institutions will be carried out in collaboration with the Italian Representation to the European Union. Ambassador Vincenzo Celeste will welcome the AESI delegation and open the proceedings. During the first phase of the mission, successive sessions will address the international crisis, the diplomatic, geopolitical, and economic repercussions of the current crisis in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and the role of the European Union and Italy in the context of the peace process in these regions.

As always, AESI will be ready not only to listen and learn about current developments and the initiatives being promoted by institutions, but also to increasingly emphasize that the European Union’s role must be strengthened through a new foreign policy based on diplomacy rooted in dialogue and cooperation.
Unfortunately, in this area, greater synergy must be sought among Member States to enable the coordinated proposal of foreign policies that address geopolitical crises in an effective and lasting manner. Simply supplying weapons for security in Ukraine is not enough. Sanctions and restrictions imposed on states that are currently causing crises on Europe’s borders and in other crisis zones such as the Middle East are ineffective unless accompanied by an active foreign policy of dialogue, understanding of the situations, encouragement of peace.

As Pope Leo has repeatedly stated, more effort is needed at the tables of peace and dialogue rather than at the tables of rearmament. On this point, AESI is very firm, partly because it believes that, at the international level, both the United Nations and the European Union must play a more significant diplomatic and political role than certain states that impose particular agendas and focus solely on their own financial, economic, and political interests. The common good at the international level must be based on solidarity and dialogue, not on the sale of arms and on conflict, which only causes division and even more painful massacres among civilian populations.
