THE CRISIS IN EASTERN EUROPE : UKRAINE
“There are all the elements to defend our democratic values and the freedom of a country from an aggressor !
In the first place we must pray to the Lord to enlighten us all (even for the aggressors and not only for those who are attacked) especially for those who are causing great pain and destruction!
But then we must return to us and encourage, make our academics on both sides understand that with their students that sincere dialogue and understanding are and will be only the ways that always remain to be pursued for the promotion of the culture of solidarity and recomposition of civil life.
I remain convinced that what I write has been and remains for me the reason for great hope in the most difficult moments of the meetings among Serbian, Muslim and Croatian Rectors and Students in Sarajevo, Belgrade, Mostar. So also in the Middle East, in the Caucasus and in the Baltic, everywhere I have been because a conflict !
Therefore justice (good or bad) is not enough to bring peace but charity which reconciles hearts is also needed !
The dramatic situation in which in Ukraine the population finds itself due to the ferocious attack of the Military Forces. We must learn this lesson of the history already lived with the past ferocious ideologies, expression of a diabolical action in the world! All the ideologies also such as that of exasperated consumerism and well-being at all costs!
All this requires a new diplomacy that has deep roots in the awareness of human dignity and solidarity! A diplomacy moved by a policy of States that is expert in humanity!
The University must rediscover its mission of service to society and the international community by promoting hope in the new generations who are the way to peace! It is necessary to prevent the birth of ideologies and nationalisms by creating those political and social situations of peaceful coexistence. Universities must mostly rediscover their mission of service to society as Pope Francis recalls by promoting the culture of solidarity and cooperation and not the ideology of competition.
We must promote the culture of listening, solidarity and the common good to prevent conflicts when possible and how much humiliates man! Prevention means first of all living the dignity of the person and then promoting it with lifestyles that make us attentive to others and their needs!
The University rediscovers this role of service and the United Nations as well as the European Union are the Actors of being an active part in the situations of the world where it is necessary to recompose souls and peoples!
The declarations and applause are not enough but a solidarity made up of policies and actions on the territory aimed at preventing and supporting before new tragedies of conflicts occur!”
