THE ROOTS AND IDENTITY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION: THE VALUE OF A NEW EUROPEAN SOLIDARY CITIZENSHIP | HIGHER EDUCATION, DIPLOMACY AND PEACE
The Middle East Directions Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre organises a seminar in collaboration with the European Association of International Studies (Associazione Europea di Studi Internazionali – AESI), led by Prof. Massimo Caneva, who gathers a delegation of graduates to participate in the seminar together with participants from the EUI, to discuss the theme of ʼUniversity, Diplomacy and Peace in the Middle Eastʼ.
This seminar constitutes one of four meetings of the AESI, taking place in Milan, Florence, Naples and Palermo during the autumn term. The meetings form part of a project that aims to inform on and promote key European themes at national level with actions oriented towards undergraduate, postgraduate and Erasmus students. The meetings’ objective is to address the priority themes of EU foreign policy with reference to peace and sustainable development. They question how and to what extent higher education can assist EU foreign policy strategies, for example in the migrant crisis, which can no longer be dealt with in terms of reception and humanitarian aid. There is a need to anticipate and promote new strategies of higher education cooperation in the origin countries that facilitate cultural and religious dialogue with the populations, to be used as an instrument to prevent such crises.
For these reasons, university students can, in their study, research and teaching activities, encourage this common pursuit of solutions. Erasmus, PhD, and Masters programmes can also lead to the formation of new professional figures in Europe to tackle the issues surrounding the reception and assistance of migrants.
The majority of the seminar will be in Italian.
